Steelhead and Stream Recovery Coalition South-Central California Coast

The Steelhead and Stream Recovery Coalition has recently created and released a new movie about Steelhead. Click here to watch the movie.

In January 2000, a Steelhead and Stream Recovery Coalition (SSRC) was organized to encourage efforts for the recovery of the threatened Southern Steelhead in San Luis Obispo County and Southern Monterey County.

Salmonid habitat restoration for species recovery and conservation requires landowner cooperation and agency coordination.

The SSRC holds bi-annual Steelhead forums for the Coalition. Participants include elected representatives; public agency representatives (national, state, county and local); watershed groups; public, private and non-profit agencies; technical resource groups; landowners; and advocates.

Forum topics for Steelhead Recovery include restoration funding sources, permitting potential restoration projects issues, water-rights information, networking and mapping updates.

The watershed groups meet annually before the Board of Supervisors to declare October Salmon and Steelhead Awareness Month.

The SSRC has created a "Steelhead's Journey through San Luis Obispo Streams," with the California Conservation Corps. This map shows streams which have Steelhead and what affects Steelhead habitat: barriers, impediments, non-native fish and plants, and restoration projects. This GIS map is updated annually by Coalition participants and identifies jurisdiction of agencies and watershed group areas. This map is a powerful tool for people to see the "big picture" of Steelhead recovery and to identify where funding, mitigation and restoration can be most effective.

The SSRC also coordinates landowner outreach and education to increase participation.
